Paul recognized the blessing and purpose of a Godly friend in Christ. Paul was a teacher, model and mentor to Timothy – he encouraged Timothy to learn and observe as a good student would.
He says in this verse that Timothy was like a son to him. Paul intended to turn over the leadership to his younger counterpart when the time came. He recognized with thankfulness the genuine friendship he had with Timothy. Paul also knew that they had a common purpose: together they had an eagerness to fulfill the call God had on their lives.
As their friendship and relationship developed, their influence on other believers grew. Even today we are learning from their example! Ask yourself: who are you learning from? Who is your mentor in the faith? Do you meet with them regularly? How can you develop that relationship? Spend some time today thanking God for the relationships he has placed in your life that allow you to learn about Him. Thank Him also for the opportunities you have to be a mentor to others. Ask Him to deepen your friendships with other believers. Ask Him to bring others into your life who can lead you deeper into knowing His purposes for you!
