Read Psalm 88:1 NLT

“O Lord, God of my salvation, I cry out to you by day. I come to you at night.”

I really like lists.  Give me a list of things to conquer and I am a happy person!  I find great satisfaction in checking things off my list…so much so that I have been known to add something I just completed to a list – just so I can check it off.  It sounds silly, I know, but I don’t like it when things feel like they are floating out there in space undone.  I like to check it off and be done with it.  I like seeing that something got accomplished.

Sometimes my prayer life feels that way.  When it does, my prayer time is more like I am sitting down with God and “my list”.  It is good that I take things to Him in prayer, but not if my prayers are like my to do list, and I’m just checking them off my list.

God intends for our prayer time to be more than just a laundry list of things to do.  He desires for it to be a time of constant pursuit to know Him and to know His will.  Our prayers shouldn’t always be the kind that can be checked off a list.

There are times when we need to pray and let it go because there are things God never intended for us to carry.  But sometimes our prayers need to be poured out again and again.  Less of something that needs to be accomplished and more of a continual surrender of our will as we seek to know His plan for our lives.
