Thank you for joining us as we have worked our way through the book of Revelation. As Pastor David continues to help us unpack the rest of the book, we are going to turn our attention in our daily devotions to the different themes found in John’s writing. For the next few weeks, we’ll dive into themes in the book of Revelation and explore how they align with the rest of Scripture.
Day 1: Throne for Righteous Judgment
Read Psalm 9:7–10
The Lord reigns forever; he has established his throne for judgment. He rules the world in righteousness and judges the peoples with equity. The Lord is a refuge for the oppressed, a stronghold in times of trouble. Those who know your name trust in you, for you, Lord, have never forsaken those who seek you.
In a world of uncertainty, I find myself overwhelmed and confused, spending too much time searching for answers to why people have to endure such trials. During my career working in the hospital, I have witnessed “bad” things that seem unjust. I have cried with families and friends during times of heartbreak, pain, and suffering. I have prayed, questioning God, demanding answers, at times writing my own stories seeking to somehow justify why such horrible things occur. I have cried tears of frustration and placed blame on myself and others in an attempt to reason and explain the wounded hearts of the oppressed.
Thankfully, I have reminders in the Bible of the Lord’s promises to keep me from getting too caught up in my woes and oppression. In John 16:33, Jesus says, “I tell you these things so that you will have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.” (NIV) I have the support of my church family to provide encouragement. I have a personal relationship with my Lord and Savior who comforts me. I have the reassurance of people who have endured trials and overcome hard and cruel seasons.
Corrie Ten Boom faced extreme trials after her family was arrested by the Nazis for hiding Jewish people in their home. Corrie spent time in solitary confinement before being transferred to a concentration camp. She and her sister faced severe malnourishment, forced labor, and many cruel conditions. Corrie never lost hope, relying on and trusting in the Lord’s promises.
Following her release, Corrie was committed to a life of evangelism. Through sharing the love of God, Corrie affirmed, “If you look at the world, you’ll be distressed. If you look within, you’ll be depressed. But if you look at Christ, you’ll be at rest.”
