Read Matthew 28:16-20 NIV
Then the eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain where Jesus had told them to go. When they saw him, they worshiped him; but some doubted. Then Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”
Jesus spent three years teaching and preparing his friends for this exact moment. The culmination of their time together was a sending! All that Jesus had shared with them wasn’t meant just for their benefit, but was meant for them to share far and wide.
This group of unlikely missionaries took Jesus’ words to heart and set out to share what the love of God had done through Jesus Christ. It is the reason you and I know about Jesus today. They knew that they could not keep silent or keep this good news only for themselves, and so, empowered by the Holy Spirit, in the mighty name of Jesus – they went.
The last part of our Mission Statement gives us our marching orders: Go and make a difference. It is not unlike the marching orders Jesus gave to his friends in today’s passage. The transforming power of God’s love, as it has been shown in YOUR life, is meant to be shared. Only you can share what God has done in your life, and some people need to hear it.
Now I know this can feel intimidating. But maybe, like I said a few days ago, we overcomplicate things. Remember…it’s all about Jesus, Community, and prayer. Not everyone is called to preach the gospel on every street corner or stage. But we all are called to place Jesus at the center of everything we do…wherever we go. And we can pray for opportunities to connect in real and tangible ways that show what God has done in our lives.
Take some time to listen for where God might want to send you. You may find that God is sending you to your family…or your workplace…your neighbor… our youth group…. or our nursery. Wherever it is, know that you go in the power and name of Jesus.
