Read: Acts 9:37-38

About that time she became sick and died, and her body was washed and placed in an upstairs room.

Tabitha enters the story dead. The book of Acts is filled with miracles performed by the disciples, invoking the power and authority of the Holy Spirit over the natural world: lepers are healed, limbs strengthened and sight restored. Acts is also filled with images of rebirth: baptisms, name changes, and the hearts of the fiercest persecutors being softened and remade. Tabitha’s story can inspire hope and faith in the Holy Spirit triumphing over death, but, just as importantly, the acts of the apostles reveal that a dead soul can also be revived. We may not come across too many corpses being revived in an upstairs room, but by God’s faithfulness we are able to encounter resurrected souls.
