Read: Proverbs 11:25
A generous person will prosper; whoever refreshes others will be refreshed.
I love a good spa day! I remember the first time I treated myself to such a day. I walked outside and thought how refreshed I felt. As the air hit my skin, I could feel my pores celebrating that they were free of the toxins and were soaking in fresh air like a cactus drinking much needed water.
It reminds me of times when I have displayed generosity towards others. Whether it be a compliment, a warm smile, giving of my finances or my time, those I touched with a generous heart seemed to walk away with a skip in their step, like they walked out of the toxins of their life and were breathing in fresh air. If only for a moment, they were pampered with the love of God.
Here’s the thing though. It wasn’t always easy to do. Being generous forced me to look beyond what I was consumed by, it hurt my pocketbook and was certainly inconvenient. It took me out of my comfort zone and forced me to do something I honestly didn’t really want to do. Someone else could do it – I was too busy. But you know what? As I continued the journey as God’s pupil, freeing myself of my toxins and understanding why God wanted me to be generous, I started to notice a softening of my heart. The desire “to treat someone to a spa moment” grew. Sometimes it was still uncomfortable but as I continued to be obedient, I started noticing the awkwardness subsiding. Not only was I providing a breath of fresh air to someone else, I noticed I felt refreshed as well!
