If I give away all my possessions, and if I hand over my body so that I may boast, but do not have love, I gain nothing.
The function of generosity is to make us more like Christ. The action of giving by itself is useless if the purpose is not achieved. Spending a full day making a Thanksgiving meal for your family won’t matter a smidge if you throw all the food away as soon as it’s ready. Jesus wants us to give for our own sake. He knows that giving conditions us to have a faithful heart that relies on God.
Pray: Holy Jesus, give us a spirit of generosity. Break our habit of selfishness and help us show your love by giving freely and cheerfully. We long for unity with you, but we don’t have the strength to sacrifice ourselves when we rely on our will. We submit everything to you. Amen.
