Read Matthew 5:14-16

“Your lives light up the world. For how can you hide a city that stands on a hilltop?  And who would light a lamp and then hide it in an obscure place?  Instead, it’s placed where everyone in the house can benefit from its light. So don’t hide your light!  Let it shine brightly before others, so that your commendable works will shine as light upon them, and then they will give their praise to your Father in heaven.”

When I was young my sister and I shared a bedroom. On one particular Christmas Eve I woke up and began the dark walk to the restroom. Before I had gone very far, my sister asked if I wanted to use her flashlight so I could see the way. As I continued my trek with her flashlight, my path and direction had become much clearer. But what struck me the most was the kindness my sister showed me. Through all of the years I’ve never forgotten that simple act of love.

When we allow our light to shine and show kindness and grace to others, it makes a difference in the lives of those around us. They feel acknowledged, cared for, and most of all, loved. Even more, they can carry that light with them and get a clearer view of the direction they are heading. Perhaps that direction leads them to Jesus – a path they may have missed had you not shared your source of light.

This week we will be reading stories of acts of service. May these narratives inspire you to let your light shine brightly before others so that all can benefit from the light of Jesus in you.
