We continue with our devotional series  “A Few of Our Favorite Things” where you’ll hear from some of our pastors and volunteers as they share how God’s Word has impacted them.

Read Hebrews 12:1 NLT

Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a huge crowd of witnesses to the life of faith, let us strip off every weight that slows us down, especially the sin that so easily trips us up. And let us run with endurance the race God has set before us.

I have always loved this verse. It comes after a list of some of the greatest people in the Bible who, by faith, accomplished amazing things. All of their stories started off like mine. They were ordinary people but they had extraordinary faith. They faced real life situations and while not always making the right choices, they persevered.

The idea of life being a race is an easy concept for me to grasp. I always feel like I am running from one thing to the next or trying to achieve just a little bit more than the person next to me. I get so caught up in everything around me that I forget that I am told to give over to God or take off the things that hold me back. This verse reminds me that if I want to have the endurance to finish the race well I need to take off the pride, addictive behaviors and jealousy that slow me down or keep me from being used in an extraordinary way by God. God is still calling ordinary people to do extraordinary things but it requires small steps of faith –  just like running a marathon is completed one mile at a time.
