Jesus Prays on the Mount of Olives The night before He is crucified
Luke 22:39 Jesus went out as usual to the Mount of Olives, and his disciples followed him. 40 On reaching the place, he said to them, “Pray that you will not fall into temptation.” 41 He withdrew about a stone’s throw beyond them, knelt down and prayed, 42 “Father, if you are willing, take this cup from me; yet not my will, but yours be done.” 43 An angel from heaven appeared to him and strengthened him. 44 And being in anguish, he prayed more earnestly, and his sweat was like drops of blood falling to the ground.
45 When he rose from prayer and went back to the disciples, he found them asleep, exhausted from sorrow. 46 “Why are you sleeping?” he asked them. “Get up and pray so that you will not fall into temptation.”
Jesus prays for His disciples not to fall into temptation. He prays for a way out, but also holds true to His promise that God’s will be done. We see the struggle, the pain, the anguish as Jesus continues to pray. Jesus encourages his disciples to get up and pray. I believe Jesus wants the same for us; to come to the Father so that we do not fall prey to the temptations of this world. Jesus knows the struggle and prepares us for the challenge we face between God’s Will and our choices.
As He hung on the cross
Luke 23:34 Jesus said, “Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing.” And they divided up his clothes by casting lots.
Jesus continues to focus on His purpose, coming to save the world and restore the relationship with God and His people. He saved us all from sin.
Jesus final words
46 Jesus called out with a loud voice, “Father, into your hands I commit my spirit.” When he had said this, he breathed his last.
Jesus fully surrenders to the Lord before taking His final breath.
May we all live the life that Jesus did, honoring and staying connected with Our Heavenly Father.
Our Father, who art in Heaven, hallowed be Thy Name,
Thy kingdom come, Thy Will be done, on earth as it is in Heaven,
Give us this day our daily bread,
Forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors,
Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.
For Thine is the kingdom, thy power and thy glory forever and ever Amen
