Read Matthew 6:33 NIV

But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.

I really like clear instructions. I remember an assignment in my college days where we had to write instructions on how to make a peanut butter and jelly sandwich. We worked in teams and then traded instructions with another team and followed their instructions…very literally. There were bags ripped open in order to “take out the bread,” jars of peanut butter rolled over slices of bread as the instructions called for “spreading the peanut butter,” and whole jars of jelly dumped onto a single slice of bread when the instructions didn’t specify how much jelly to use. It was a hilarious mess. But a clear demonstration of how important it is to have clear instructions – and give them in the right order.

It makes me think about how we sometimes get ahead of ourselves in life and make a mess out of things – only it’s not always so hilarious. It is often painful for us and those around us. Instead of broken pieces of bread lying like shrapnel on the ground, we find our hearts in pieces. Or instead of sticky fingers we find ourselves stuck in impossible situations. Today’s verse is like the ultimate in instructions with a first step – Seek God first.  Everything else gets clearer and better when we seek to grow our relationship with God first.

What do you need to do today to put your priorities in order so that your relationship with God is first?
