Day 3 – Attacking Identity
Read Matthew 4:3-4
3 The tempter came to him and said, “If you are the Son of God, tell these stones to become bread.” 4 Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.’
The first temptation begins with a subtle phrase:
“If you are the Son of God…”
Notice what Satan attacks first. He attacks identity.
Just days earlier, the Father had publicly declared Jesus’ identity. Now Satan seeks to plant doubt about that very truth.
The enemy often works the same way today.
He may not tempt us exactly as he tempted Jesus, but he frequently questions what God has already declared. He whispers doubts about our worth, our calling, our forgiveness, and our standing before God.
Jesus responds by quoting Scripture:
“Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.”
Jesus does not argue emotionally. He does not negotiate. He stands on God’s Word.
When our identity is rooted in circumstances, success, approval, or performance, it becomes vulnerable. But when our identity is anchored in what God says about us, we gain stability even during hardship.
The wilderness revealed that Jesus trusted the Father’s voice more than His immediate physical needs.
As believers, we are called to do the same.
The world constantly offers competing definitions of who we are. Yet our truest identity is found in Christ. We are loved, redeemed, adopted, forgiven, and called according to His purpose.
When doubts arise, return to Scripture. Let God’s voice speak louder than every other voice competing for your attention.
Truth remains truth even when circumstances make it difficult to believe.
Something to prayerfully consider today:
Whose voice has been shaping your identity lately—God’s voice or the voices around you?
