DAY 1 – LED BY THE SPIRIT

Read Matthew 4:1

“Then Jesus was led by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil.”

Many believers assume that if God is leading them, the path will always become easier. Matthew 4 challenges that assumption immediately. Jesus had just experienced the affirmation of His baptism. The heavens opened, the Spirit descended, and the Father declared, “This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased” (Matthew 3:17).

The very next verse tells us that the Spirit led Jesus into the wilderness.

Notice that Jesus was not driven there by failure, sin, or poor decisions. He was led there by God. The wilderness was not evidence that God had abandoned Him; it was evidence that God was preparing Him.

Throughout Scripture, God often uses wilderness seasons as places of formation. Israel spent forty years in the desert. Moses spent years tending sheep in Midian before leading a nation. Elijah fled into the wilderness before hearing God’s still, small voice. Before Jesus began His public ministry, He entered a season of isolation, testing, and dependence.

Many of us encounter wilderness experiences we did not choose. A career challenge, financial uncertainty, loneliness, disappointment, illness, or unanswered prayers can make us feel forgotten. Yet sometimes God accomplishes His deepest work in the places where our usual comforts and supports are removed.

The wilderness strips away distractions. It reveals what we trust. It exposes weaknesses that God intends to strengthen. Most importantly, it teaches us to depend upon Him rather than ourselves.

The wilderness is rarely comfortable, but it is often transformational.

If you find yourself in a difficult season today, remember that being in the wilderness does not necessarily mean you are outside God’s will. You may be exactly where He is shaping you for what comes next.

Something to prayerfully consider today:

What wilderness season might God be using right now to deepen your dependence upon Him?  If you’re not in a wilderness experience now, can you think of a time you were and what you might have learned from it?
