Read Hebrews 11:6
“Without faith, it is impossible to please God.”
You probably aren’t supposed to have favorite disciples…but I do. It’s Peter. I like Peter because he did some really bold things, but he messed up a lot too – kind of like me. I love the account of Jesus calling Peter to walk out on the water to Him. (Matthew 14) Peter didn’t hesitate. You might say he jumped in with both feet! When Peter stepped out of the boat, he completely let go of what he thought was safe in order to step forward in faith. He did not keep his hand on the side of the boat… just in case. He didn’t play it safe. Peter learned that you cannot play it safe and please God.
Peter didn’t always get it right…pretty soon after he got out of that boat in faith he started to sink in fear. But he learned that even in his fear Jesus was there. Even though he faltered, Peter’s faith grew and eventually he would stand boldly in that faith proclaiming Jesus as the Messiah and helping to give direction to the early church.
What part of this life have you been holding onto for safety? What things in your life have you been afraid to let go of?
It’s time to take a step of faith today! Maybe your next step is accepting Jesus as your Savior for the first time. Maybe it’s tithing, signing up for a small group or finding a place to serve at Cross Creek. Just as Jesus told Peter to come meet Him in the water, He is calling out to you, too.
