READ 1 Samuel 24:11

See, my father, look at this piece of your robe in my hand! I cut off the corner of your robe but did not kill you. See that there is nothing in my hand to indicate that I am guilty of wrongdoing or rebellion. I have not wronged you, but you are hunting me down to take my life.

Today, we continue with David’s conversation with Saul, just outside the cave where David had been hiding.

Because of God’s grace and mercy, David is able to show mercy to Saul and he wants Saul to know about it. David wants to put an end to all this nonsense, so he approaches Saul with confidence. David gives an account of what just happened in the cave, stressing the fact that Saul’s life was spared and that he has no plans to harm him. David reminds Saul that he did nothing wrong, yet Saul is trying to kill him.

David reveals his true character by approaching Saul with respect and stating the facts. Saul was given the ultimate gift of life through mercy. Mercy, by simple definition, is not getting what is deserved. Someone could easily defend David for killing Saul – after all, Saul was out to get him. But David chose MERCY! David chose life! David chose to honor God!

My prayer for us comes from Hebrews 4:16 “Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need.

Dear God, thank you for the gift of life. Thank you for the many blessings we receive through grace and the continuous mercy that is shown to us time and time again. Help us to honor you by passing along these gifts to others through compassion, kindness, and forgiveness. Amen
