READ 1 Samuel 24
In 1 Samuel 24, we learn that King Saul is out to kill David. Consequently, David retreats with his men and hides out in a cave. Saul comes into that very same cave David is hiding in, alone and in a vulnerable state.
David’s men encourage David to kill Saul, but David takes his sword and cuts off a piece of Saul’s robe, not physically harming Saul in any way. In fact, Saul does not even notice.
David could have easily killed Saul and had the support of many men. His friends were encouraging him and trying to convince David that Saul was delivered to him by the Lord, but David did not accept that this opportunity should result in death.
David knew it was wrong to kill Saul, so instead he simply cut off a piece of Saul’s robe. By severing this piece of cloth and sparing a man’s life, David revealed a greater, more powerful message to his men: David kept true to the Lord and His commandment “You shall not murder” (Exodus 20:13). Obedience to God is what prevents David from killing Saul.
Blessed are those whose ways are blameless, who walk according to the law of the Lord. Blessed are those who keep his statutes and seek him with all their heart—they do no wrong but follow his ways. Psalm 119:1-3
Prayer: Lord, help me to resist temptation and instead choose to walk according to Your law, keeping Your statutes. Give me the strength to seek You with my whole heart, and to follow in Your ways. Amen.
