Read Ephesians 2:8-10 NLT

God saved you by his grace when you believed. And you can’t take credit for this; it is a gift from God. Salvation is not a reward for the good things we have done, so none of us can boast about it. For we are God’s masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so we can do the good things he planned for us long ago.

I read once that “we do because we know,” and I think that is an appropriate phrase for us to keep in mind as we begin the study of Ephesians. The whole book of Ephesians is wrapped up in this concept of “knowing” and “doing.” That begs us to ask ourselves – What exactly do we know? And, what exactly are we supposed to be doing because of what we know?

Let’s start with what we know – today’s verses illustrate beautifully what we can know through Scripture. We are saved by the amazing grace of God through Jesus Christ and his sacrifice on the cross. Not because we deserved it, our sin is too great.  Nor could we earn it, the cost would be too high. But we are offered salvation and grace simply because it pleased God to do so, because of his great love for us. We were created, crafted, pursued, and redeemed…all because of love. It is that love that is meant to transform us and inform all that we do with our lives. We do… because we know – of the greatness of God’s love and salvation through which he has redeemed us.

Pray

Lord,

We thank You for the way that You have created us and for the grace that You so willingly gave us. On our own, we are self-serving, often seeking to get the credit for the good things we have done. Remind us this week that You are the source of all that is good in us.  May the imprint of Your love be stamped on everything we do so that others will see You when they see what You are doing through us. You have a grand plan for our lives – a perfect design that our human minds could scarcely comprehend! Soften our hearts and open our eyes to who You would have us be and how You would have us live. Amen.
