Today’s Reading: Philippians 2:14-18 ESV

Do all things without grumbling or disputing, that you may be blameless and innocent, children of God without blemish in the midst of a crooked and twisted generation, among whom you shine as lights in the world, holding fast to the word of life, so that in the day of Christ I may be proud that I did not run in vain or labor in vain. Even if I am to be poured out as a drink offering upon the sacrificial offering of your faith, I am glad and rejoice with you all. Likewise you also should be glad and rejoice with me.

More About Philippians 2:14-18

In Philippians 2:17, Paul compared himself to a “drink offering.” It was a common practice in both the Old Testament and Greco-Roman culture to pour wine out on the ground or on an altar with a sacrifice. (Genesis 35:14; Exodus 29:40-41; Leviticus 23:13) We read about it in Numbers 28:1-8 when God instructed Moses on the laws and requirements for daily sacrificial offerings. God said, “In the Holy Place you shall pour out a drink offering of strong drink to the LORD” (Numbers 28:7b).

Paul’s point to the Philippians was that he was fully committed to his calling to preach the gospel, even if it involved sacrifice. Even if it required every last ounce of his strength. He found joy in giving himself fully to God and the Kingdom work he had been given. Because Paul knew that his life and his work had eternal purpose and significance, he was glad and rejoiced with his fellow brothers and sisters in Christ. (Philippians 2:17) What an example for us as we seek to live for Christ. Even when it involves a cost, we can celebrate.

Prayer: Dear God, I don’t always feel worthy enough to be a vessel for Your light. Thank You for sending Your Son to die on my behalf so I can stand before You as Your pure and blameless child. Help me to put the needs of others above my insecurities, so I can boldly shine Your light without hesitation. I pray Your redeeming work in my life would provide a glimmer of light and hope to anyone feeling lost in the dark. And may You receive all the glory, honor and thanks for all that is good in my life and in this world. In Jesus’ name, amen.
