Can a follower of Christ experience depression? Yes, we can and many have…

All throughout the Psalms we hear the voice of despair. In Psalm 13:2 David asks “How long must I take counsel in my soul and have sorrow in my heart all the day? How long shall my enemy be exalted over me?”

Other examples of people who struggle with depression can be found throughout the Bible.

Job (found in the book of Job)

     Hannah (1 Samuel 1-2)

Jeremiah (found in the book of Jeremiah)

Be sure and read their entire stories, as you will weep with them in their sorrows, but then rejoice with them in their blessings!

The Bible is full of reassurance, here are some other Scriptures as a reference to help you in times of your own struggles:

My personal go-to is “Do not despair for God will never leave you or forsake you.” Deuteronomy 31:8

“Don’t be afraid, for I am with you” Isaiah 41:10

Jesus says “come to Me all who are heavy burdened so that I may give you rest. Matthew 11:28

”For the Lord comforts His people and will have compassion on His afflicted ones.” Isaiah 49:13

“Do not be afraid, do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you always.” Joshua 1:9

“Be confident in this, that He who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.” Philippians 1:6

“And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love Him, who have been called according to His purpose.” Romans 8:28

This one hangs on my bedroom wall: “I have told you these things so that you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.” John 16:33

My prayer for you is: “May the God of hope fill you with peace as you trust in the Lord, so that you may overflow with the power of the Holy Spirit.” Romans 15:13

May you find comfort today in God’s Word.
