Read: Proverbs 27:17
“As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another.”
Have you ever had a bad day? I have had a few. One thing I have learned about myself is that on my bad days my tendency is to pull away from others. It’s as if I am ashamed of my bad day and don’t want to burden anyone with my struggles. I find it difficult to put one foot in front of the other on the toughest of days. If I am honest with myself, I can see that this is actually kind of ridiculous. We all have bad days, difficult weeks, and maybe even a tough year or season. We all have challenges. I love today’s verse. It is simple and direct. “As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another.” I appreciate a good visual to help me understand the main point and this verse conjures up a great visual for me. Can you see it too? I picture the blade of an axe that has dulled and I visualize myself standing at a work bench with a blade sharpener and I see sparks flying all around. I visualize myself with my safety gear in place and my goggles over my eyes as I lean into the blade sharpener. I picture beads of sweat accumulating under all my gear as I work with my blade sharpener to prepare my blade. This visual is a great analogy for what God is calling us to do in our lives. When our blades get dull, or our struggles come, He calls us to lean into others and allow them to help us sharpen our edges again. If we never leaned into the sharpener, we could never repair our edges. I believe the people in our lives are representative of the sharpener. God calls us to live in community with other believers. He calls us to share our joys as well as our struggles. I work daily to lean into the love of the community He has placed before me. How about you? Does your axe blade need a little sharpening? Well, let’s encourage one another to put on our safety gear and lean into the sharpener. Whom has He placed in your life to come alongside you? Reach out today and receive the love. “As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another.”
Dear Lord,
Thank you for reminding me to lean into the love and guidance of other believers to help me keep my edges sharpened and be prepared for each day. Lord, perhaps this is a brand new concept for me to think about living in community with other believers. Help me today to begin to seek and discover the people who are in my life or who will be in my life that can help keep me pointed toward you. I am seeking an iron sharpener that I can lean into to keep me focused on You. Help me to be that iron sharpener for someone else too! Allow me to begin to treasure living in community with other believers and never giving up doing so. In Jesus name! Amen.
