Read Psalm 119:133

Direct my footsteps according to your word; let no sin rule over me.

Sometimes sin shows up like a flashing neon sign.  It seems hard to mistake for anything else and easy to avoid.  But sometimes sin kind of sneaks up on us.  It shows up when we least expect it – maybe in a reply that isn’t quite the whole truth in order to save face with a friend, or in a sarcastic remark that was intended to carry more sting than humor.  Or maybe it shows up in impatient words when grace and understanding should have been shown.  We might have an understanding that our reactions or actions are wrong, but they seem small and insignificant, so we sweep them under the carpet.  We pass them off as no big deal, and in doing so we give them control over us.  We give them power to show up again and again as “no big deal.”

Personally, I would like to think that I am strong enough, that my will power and my resolve will keep me from sinning.  But that is just not the case.  I could never be strong enough or smart enough to keep from sinning on my own.  But God’s Word is strong enough to keep us from sin if we let it guide us.  I love that God speaks to everything we need in order to live a life that honors Him – packed right into His Word!  Noah showed great obedience in the face of ridicule.  Joseph showed great patience and forgiveness when he was deserted by his family.  Esther was a picture of bravery as she spoke up for what was right instead of remaining silent.  Ruth showed compassion when she had every right to be selfish.  Those are just a few examples of how God’s word speaks directly to the sins that would trip us up and keep us captive.  Get into His Word today!  Seek His direction so that no sin would have control over you.
