Read Romans 5:3-5 NLT

We can rejoice, too, when we run into problems and trials, for we know that they help us develop endurance.  And endurance develops strength of character, and character strengthens our confident hope of salvation.  And this hope will not lead to disappointment. For we know how dearly God loves us, because he has given us the Holy Spirit to fill our hearts with his love.

“No pain, no gain.”  This is a quote that sort of makes me want to roll my eyes and gives me visions of muscle-bound guys strutting slowly through the gym. But it does have some merit and it not only applies to the gym, but to our spiritual lives as well.  In the gym, it makes sense that if you put the work in physically, you will eventually see your efforts pay off in your health and wellness. In our lives it would be nice if we never had to go through situations that tried our patience or pushed our emotional buttons – difficult things.  But if the adage holds any truth, it stands to reason that those very same difficult things are what help us to grow and change for the better.

What is the hardest lesson you have had to learn?  How has it changed you?  How has it made you a stronger person spiritually?

The beauty of God’s grace is that when we accept Christ, we are no longer alone in difficult situations.  The Holy Spirit has been given to us and will help us make choices that honor God and strengthen our faith.
