Read Luke 2:28-35 NIV

Simeon took him in his arms and praised God, saying:

“Sovereign Lord, as you have promised,
you may now dismiss your servant in peace.

For my eyes have seen your salvation,
which you have prepared in the sight of all nations:

a light for revelation to the Gentiles,
and the glory of your people Israel.”

The child’s father and mother marveled at what was said about him. Then Simeon blessed them and said to Mary, his mother: “This child is destined to cause the falling and rising of many in Israel, and to be a sign that will be spoken against, so that the thoughts of many hearts will be revealed. And a sword will pierce your own soul too.”

Mary and Joseph arrived at the temple to present Jesus to the Lord and offer a sacrifice as was required. But I am sure that they did not expect the greeting they would receive! They were greeted by Simeon – a man to whom God had promised that he would not die until he had seen the Messiah with his own eyes. Simeon was moved by the Holy Spirit and spoke these words (today’s verses) over Jesus. Mary and Joseph were amazed at all of it. Can you imagine being told, by a complete stranger, that your child is God’s revealed salvation – a light for even the Gentiles and the glory (the praise, honor, and distinction) of Israel? Up until this point God had only revealed these truths to a handful of people, but here it was declared right in the temple. What confirmation Mary and Joseph must have felt at Simeon’s words for the path that God had them and their new born son on. Simeon confirmed God’s plan for redemption and salvation through Jesus, but he also hinted that it would all come at a great cost.

Mary and Joseph would need to remember God’s power in giving us Jesus and trust in His power for what was yet to come.

The same is true for us. The same power of salvation – that which frees us from sin and brings us back into a right relationship with God, is the same power He has given us for living. It is power for the difficult things in life – for loss and grief, family, work, financial struggles, and relationships.  He is in control and His power to make all things right is where we can place our trust, too.
