Thank you for joining us as we have worked our way through the book of Revelation. As Pastor David continues to help us unpack the rest of the book, we are going to turn our attention in our daily devotions to the different themes found in John’s writing. For the next four weeks, we’ll dive into themes in the book of Revelation and explore how they align with the rest of Scripture.
This week we will explore the themes of God’s sovereignty and the triumph of Christ.
Day 1
Read: Genesis 49:8-10 (The Lion of Judah)
“Judah, your brothers will praise you; your hand will be on the neck of your enemies/your father’s sons will bow down to you. You are a lion’s cub, Judah, you return from the prey, my son. Like a lion he crouches and lies down, like a lioness–who dares to rouse him? The scepter will not depart from Judah, nor the ruler’s staff from between his feet, until he to whom it belongs shall come and the obedience of the nations shall be his.”
Read Revelation 5:5-6
Then one of the elders said to me, “Do not weep! See, the Lion of the tribe of Judah, the Root of David, has triumphed. He is able to open the scroll and its seven seals.”
Then I saw a Lamb, looking as if it had been slain, standing at the center of the throne, encircled by the four living creatures and the elders. The Lamb had seven horns and seven eyes, which are the seven spirits of God sent out into all the earth.
These verses in Genesis call the people to wait for the Lion who is to come. In Revelation 5:5-6, the Lion of Judah, Jesus Christ, is pictured as both a Lion (symbolizing His authority and power) and a Lamb (symbolizing His submission to God’s will). Jesus the Lamb was the perfect sacrifice for the sins of all mankind. Therefore, only He can save us from the terrible events revealed by the scrolls in Revelation. The role of Christ, the Lion of Judah, will be to lead the battle where Satan is finally defeated. The Lion of Judah is victorious because of what Christ the Lamb has already done.
Reflection: How does viewing Jesus as a conquering Lion change your perspective on His authority today?
