Read Acts 4:31 NIV

After they prayed, the place where they were meeting was shaken. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and spoke the word of God boldly.

Today’s verse helps to give us a glimpse of the power that is available when God’s people come together in prayer. But what is prayer really and why does it unlock the power of God in our lives?   I love this definition from Matt Slick, of Christian Apologetics and Research Ministry:

“Prayer is the practice of the presence of God.  It is the place where pride is abandoned, hope is lifted, and supplication is made.  Prayer is the place of admitting our need, of adopting humility, and claiming dependence upon God.  Prayer is the needful practice of the Christian.  Prayer is the exercise of faith and hope.  Prayer is the privilege of touching the heart of the Father through the Son of God, Jesus our Lord.”

I love that! Prayer is the practice of the presence of God – intentionally laying down all that we are in search of who God is and simply being in His presence. WOW! That’s why there is power there!  It’s not about us. It’s about seeking God’s heart. When we pray, we are praying  to God, maker of the universe, the one who holds all things and the giver of love and hope.

Lord, let the ground be shaken with our prayers today and fill us with Your presence! We come to You humble and willing to listen, with hearts ready to obey. Speak and guide us. Be in our midst and give us boldness to proclaim who You are to all who would listen. Amen.
