Reading: Psalm 130

On this final day of Holy Week, known to some as “Holy Saturday”, we take some time to sit in a “liminal space”. Today is an in-between day, a “neither here nor there” day.

Have you ever had to sit in the space of an unanswered prayer? Have you ever called out to God and heard nothing in response? That’s precisely the experience of the disciples on Holy Saturday. It was undoubtedly an emotional day. I can imagine their grief. Their fear. Their confusion. Their despair. In some Christian traditions, believers gather to wait in “vigil” for Easter Sunday. Jesus followers had heard him say in various ways that on the third day he would rise again. I’m sure they felt a mix of hope and dread. They were still trying to understand. What if they were wrong? What if they were right?

Today, we join the disciples in waiting. Though we know the other side of the story, take some time to reflect on the experience of this “in between” day.

Prayer: Lord, in this in-between space, where what is unknown seems more powerful than what is known, I sit humbly in vigil, waiting for you to move. Help me to worship in my waiting.
