Read Matthew 11:28 NIV

“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.”

Do you ever feel like you are working really hard at trying to manage all that could possibly happen in your world?  Do you try to anticipate what might come next, head off the bad stuff and make room for all the good stuff?  Do a million different scenarios play through your head as you try to choose the right one?

Some days I just feel like I am running, running, running through those scenarios…and not getting very far.  It can be exhausting!  All that “running” really boils down to the idea that I like to be in control.  And when I don’t feel like I am in control – I begin to get anxious.  And when I am anxious, I work even harder to be in control.  It is a vicious, tiring cycle. I keep reaching for control and allowing my anxious thoughts to take over forgetting that true rest is right within my reach.

Let’s allow today’s verse to remind us that God is waiting for us to reach out and hand him our worries and our anxious thoughts – the things that weigh us down.  He never intended for us to carry that weight to begin with.  Allow Him to be in control and provide you with the rest your soul needs.  Today, bring all that is weighing you down to Him in prayer.

Lord,

I am sorry for the times when I take over and allow anxiety and worry to be the driving force in my life. That is no way to live. But, thank you for the rest that can only be found in you. Help me to release the need to grasp at control. When my anxious thoughts want to take over, wash over me with a stillness that helps me release into your capable hands the things I am trying to control. Help me to trust you with them. Amen.
