Read Luke 4:18 NIV

“The Spirit of the Lord is on me,

    because he has anointed me

to proclaim good news to the poor.

He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners

and recovery of sight for the blind,

to set the oppressed free,

Jesus stood in the temple that day and recited the familiar words of Isaiah to the crowd that had gathered. I imagine a smile crept into the corners of Jesus’ mouth as he revealed what he came to do through the words they had heard many times before.

What a joyful proclamation He offered that day – Freedom!  It might not have been freedom in the way they had anticipated, but it was so much more. Jesus came to provide freedom not only for the Jewish people, but for anyone who would put their trust in Him. And that’s good news for all of us!

Sin has no hold on us. How are you doing at receiving that gift and actually living in it?  Sometimes it can be hard to walk in freedom.  We slip back into old patterns and before we know it, sin and shame have their hold on us again.  But we need not live as captives any more.  Jesus’ love has covered it all!   Our chains are gone and our eyes are opened by the goodness of Christ.  Freedom is ours to walk in – what a gift!
