Read John 18
The night before the crucifixion of Christ, Jesus gathers with His disciples for the Last Supper. Jesus explains that He will be leaving them and that they cannot come. Peter asks, “Lord why can’t I follow you? I will lay down my life for you.” Jesus answers, “Will you really lay down your life for me?” Very truly I tell you, before the rooster crows you will disown me three times.” (John 13:37-38) And just as Jesus predicts, Peter denies being a disciple after being questioned three times and the rooster crows…Cock-a doodle-do. (John 18:15-18, 25-27)
Jesus is sentenced, crucified, died, buried, and rose and makes His appearance. One evening after He appears to His disciples, Jesus has a conversation with Peter after dinner. Jesus asks Peter, “Do you love me?” Peter responds, “Yes, Lord, You know that I love You.” Jesus says, “Feed my lambs.” And Jesus asks again, “Do you love me?” Peter answers, “Yes, Lord, You know that I love You.” Jesus again says, “Take care of my sheep.” For a third time, Jesus asks, “Simon, son of John, do you love me?” Peter was hurt because Jesus kept asking him. He said, “Lord, you know all things; You know that I love You.” Jesus replied, “Feed my sheep.” (John 21:15-17)
Jesus is the Great Shepherd, the sheep are His people. Jesus gives Peter three chances to redeem himself and gives him the responsibility of caring for, guiding, and nurturing Jesus’ followers, particularly those who are weak or need special attention. This is a call to the ministry, even after he denied Jesus. This is what the forgiveness of sin looks like! This is the reason Jesus died and rose again; so that forgiveness is granted and second chances and opportunities are offered to honor God. Friend, I’m here to tell you that NOTHING you have done can separate you from the Love of God! You are forgiven and God is not done with You yet.
PRAYER:
Thank You, Jesus, for giving up Your life for us. While we were still sinners, You died for us; to set us free from the bondage. We are no longer separated from God, having received the free gift of salvation from You. Help us to be confident when God asks something of us to further bring about His glory. May we be as obedient as You! In Your Name we pray, Amen
