Read: John 8:12 ESV

Again Jesus spoke to them saying “I Am the Light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”

Let’s take a minute and go back to The Beginning (Genesis 1:1-5 NIV)

1 In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. 2 Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters.

The Earth was formless and empty, and dark. The Lord knew something needed to be done about the darkness. He knew the world needed LIGHT

3 And God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light.

The Lord commanded and so it became.  “LIGHT.” This was the very first thing that the Lord spoke into existence.

4 God saw that the light was good, and he separated the light from the darkness. 5 God called the light “day,” and the darkness he called “night.” And there was evening, and there was morning—the first day.

The Lord saw that light was good! He was pleased. He had created day and night on the first day!

LIGHT – something God knew was needed, so He called for it. After He created it, it seems like He is more pleased than He thought. Because of its goodness, God recognized the need to separate the light from the darkness. He did all this on the first day!! This speaks volumes of the importance of light. God created light first, before anything else.

By definition light is a noun: something that makes vision possible. Synonyms include: illumination, shine, glow, radiance. Light provided visibility through illumination. Light created a shine, a glow. It was radiant! Light cut through the darkness. God was able to see the goodness of light and desired to protect it from the darkness.

Through light, God created a boundary.  God defined this through day and night; evening and morning. This would later become the defining time to work and the time to rest. It is also representative of the separation of good and evil.

The light is pleasant, and it is good for the eyes to see the sun. Ecclesiastes 11:7

For the fruit of the light consists in all goodness and righteousness and truth. Ephesians 5:9

LIGHT was created for goodness; LIGHT is essential.  Goodness is essential. Jesus is good and righteous. Jesus is essential!

God, Thank you for the beautiful gift of Jesus, the light of the World.
