Read: 1 Samuel 16

Today’s story is a bit of a prequel to yesterday’s story about the battle with Goliath. At some point during his teenage years, David was out with his family’s flocks when he was summoned to join his seven brothers to meet Samuel – the Lord’s prophet.

To everyone’s surprise, even Samuel’s, God tells Samuel to anoint David as the next King of Israel. The passage then tells us that the spirit of God “rushed” upon David (ESV). From that point on, the chronology of the story as it is written in Scripture gets a bit confusing, but it is highly likely that it was another 15-20 years before David would actually become King. During that time, he defeated Goliath and played the harp in Saul’s court, but most of it was spent alone in the wilderness, hiding from King Saul.

Amazingly, he never took matters into his own hands. He never attempted to usurp the throne. He waited. He was faithful with each opportunity God gave him, and let God take the lead. I love the way the amplified bible defines faith in Hebrews 11:1 “faith comprehends as fact what cannot be experienced by the physical senses”. David comprehended as fact (his anointing) what he was not yet experiencing (his Kingship).

What do you need to comprehend as fact today, even if you are not experiencing it?
