Read John 12 – 13
In the book of John we have learned that Jesus did many things, specifically seven signs to reveal His identity and encourage belief in Him as the Messiah, the Son of God. The first sign of His power is shown at a wedding in Cana, where His mother informs Him that there is no more wine. Implying He must do something and He does. But before turning water into wine Jesus warns His mother, “My hour has not yet come.” By saying this He sets the stage that all acts which bring about glory and bear witness to the power of God should be between Him and His Father. Jesus is pointing out that timing is a crucial part of the process.
It isn’t until John chapter 12 that Jesus reveals, “The hour has come for the Son of Man to be glorified. Now my soul is troubled, and what shall I say? Father save me from this hour? No, it was for this very reason I came to this hour. Father, glorify your name!” Jesus knows the time has come.
As Jesus prepares His disciples for His death, He encourages them (and us) to believe in Him and trust in the process. Just as Jesus has trusted in His Father and His timing, He empathizes with His disciples and encourages them. He tells them, “You do not realize now what I am doing, but later you will understand”. (John 13:7) He goes on to explain, “I am telling you now before it happens, so that when it does happen, you will believe that I am who I am. (John 13:19)” Jesus reassures them, “Where I am going, you cannot follow me, but you will follow later.” (John 13:36)
Waiting on God’s timing requires faith, patience, and trust. In the process of waiting our faith is strengthened, our patience increased, and our trust brings about peace. God’s timing is rarely our timing – however, we can be certain it is the best!
