Read: Proverbs 19:17

Whoever is kind to the poor lends to the Lord, and he will reward them for what they have done.

Many years ago when my son was young, we were shopping in a department store when he came to me and said he wanted to buy me a glass perfume bottle and ring holder. To see this little seven-year-old come to me, with excitement and love in his eyes, wanting to give me a gift, was beyond heartwarming. Because he was young, he did earn a little bit of an allowance but not much. So, my first instinct was to tell him “No honey, save your money”. Fortunately, the friend shopping with us that day quietly gave me the look indicating I should let him buy me the gift. I knew my son didn’t have much to give away, but I was trying to raise him to be a kind, selfless, and loving person. Therefore it was important that I allow him to be generous, even if it was all the money he had. It helped to know I had and would continue to provide for him, so all his needs were met when his money was gone.

Our Heavenly Father provides for us in the same way. He asks us to give selflessly and in love, knowing He is our ultimate provider and will continue to provide for our needs. When we live our life knowing this, we begin to display His qualities of giving. We no longer think about what our money means to us but rather what it means to others.

Like my young son, let’s forget about the allowance in our piggy bank when we look at others. Give selflessly, with the eyes of a child, eager and excited to bless with love.
