Read: James 1:26 NRSV
If any think they are religious, and do not bridle their tongues but deceive their hearts, their religion is worthless.
What good is our faith if it does not lead to action? As protestants, we acknowledge that our salvation is a work of grace by faith, all gifts from God. We do not believe that actions (or works, as Paul called them) bring about our salvation. But just as we cannot be saved without faith, we cannot have faith without action. Action is the natural result of faith. So, as James says, those who say they believe and proclaim themselves to be religious without the natural progression of works are lying to themselves. All the bible study and “church talk” in the world can’t replace the true faith that produces works. Eating a York peppermint patty is not the same as brushing your teeth, even if both make your mouth feel minty.
