Read Genesis 17:17 NIV

Abraham fell facedown; he laughed and said to himself, “Will a son be born to a man a hundred years old? Will Sarah bear a child at the age of ninety?”

When Abraham was 75 years old God called him to leave the family and home he had known all his life and set out on a journey to a land God would show him.  He didn’t even know where he was going…only that God would lead him and that God would bless him and make him a blessing to others ( Genesis 12:1-4). Abraham was obedient and left his home in search of the land and the blessing God would provide. He trusted God completely and stepped out in great faith.

Nearly 25 years later, we see a little bit of a different side of Abraham. The man who once left all he had ever known simply on a promise from God, now bowed in worship and reverence to God, yet laughing at God’s outrageous claim that he and his wife would have a child in their old age.  In one instance his faith was completely unwavering and in another he was filled with doubt.

I think we all have a bit of Abraham in us if we are honest. We exhibit faith that is rock solid in one moment and then wavers the next. What Abraham  learned and what we can learn is that God’s faithfulness is not dependent on us. Abraham doubted…but God still gave him a son.  We have doubts…but God’s love is still offered through the gift of salvation found in Jesus Christ. God’s love and faithfulness is bigger than our doubt could ever be.
