Read – Matthew 5:13 NIV

“You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled underfoot.

I typically do not eat a lot of salt in my diet, but I must admit, put a bag of chips in front of me and I can’t stop eating them. With each salty bite, I crave more. Jesus referenced that desire for salt in this scripture. Salt can add flavor to food. However, His reference went beyond the simple potato chip. Jesus tells us we are the salt of the earth. As His disciples we are to add flavor to a fallen world. If we do not, it loses any flavor and leaves those who do not know Him without hope.

If a potato chip had no salt, would we want to keep going back for another taste? In the same sense, if we are not representing God in the world, how will the world know what it means to desire Him?

Demonstrating love by serving others gives us an opportunity to add seasoning to their lives. God will make His presence known to all, but He gives us the chance to share His message. The choice is ours. Will we blend in with the rest of the world or season it with the love of God?
