This is a clear sign to them of their destruction, but of your salvation, and that from God. For it has been granted to you that for the sake of Christ you should not only believe in him but also suffer for his sake, engaged in the same conflict that you saw I had and now hear that I still have.

Jesus told the disciples they should expect persecution and suffering, but not be terrified. (Luke 21:9-19) He encouraged them to settle their hearts beforehand and see adversity as an opportunity to bear witness. Pending destruction is only a temporary discomfort because our eternal deliverance is sure. (Philippians 1:28; 2 Corinthians 1:8-10; 2 Timothy 4:18)
As we take a stand for Christ, remembering God’s promises will help us stay steadfast:
- The Holy Spirit empowers us with God’s power, love and self-control. We do not need to fear oppression and obstacles. Christ has entrusted us with the gospel, and He will guard us until He returns. (2 Timothy 1:7-12)
- We have been chosen to partner with Christ as we suffer, and His glory will rest upon us and be revealed through our perseverance. (1 Peter 4:10-12)
- God’s grace will restore, confirm, strengthen and establish us. (1 Peter 5:9-10)
- Christ has promised to bless those who endure persecution for the gospel. (Matthew 5:10-12)
Christ never forsakes those who faithfully take a stand for His name. (Matthew 10:32-33)
Prayer: Lord, give us strength and courage to live with bolder faith. Help us to remember that our present suffering is not permanent. Fill us with Your peace and joy as we face this day. Wherever You lead, we will follow. In Jesus’ name, amen.
