Daily Devotional
There are accounts of personal encounters with God sprinkled throughout the Bible. This week we will spend time looking at some of those accounts and exploring how God spoke to ordinary people – like you and me.
And the Lord came and called as before, “Samuel! Samuel!”
And Samuel replied, “Speak, your servant is listening.”
Young Samuel was asleep in the temple one night, when he heard someone calling his name. He ran to Eli, his teacher to see what he needed only to discover that Eli had not been the one to call him. I am certain that Samuel had to have been confused and maybe a little frightened as he heard his name called again and again. Three times he heard his name called and three times he ran to Eli’s side. At last, Eli recognized that God was speaking directly to Samuel and as a good teacher should, he gave Samuel the tools he needed to recognize and respond to God’s voice.
Sometimes we are a bit like Samuel. We go through life a little confused and frightened. We run to those around us for answers and direction only to discover that their abilities to guide us are limited and fall short. Just as God called out to Samuel that night in the temple, He’s calling out to us. He’s consistent and He’s persistent – speaking above the other noise in our lives. He’s just waiting for us to recognize His voice and respond. Are you listening?
