Read Acts 2:42

They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and to fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer.

This one short sentence describes the heart of the early church. They spent the bulk of their days devoted to learning all they could about Jesus as their Savior, being together, and praying.  It’s not a very long list.  Sometimes I think we overcomplicate faith in an effort to make sure we “get it right.” But, could it be as simple as 1. Jesus –  2. Community – and 3. Prayer??!!!  I think it could!

For today – let’s just look at the first one – Jesus.

Getting to know who God is, is key.  That is the foundation of our faith.  The early church understood this, too.  Jesus was at the center of God’s love for us, and so they made it their mission to seek out the truth of the gospel for their lives.  It’s part of our mission, too.  That’s why our Mission statement at Cross Creek begins with – “We exist to help people Know God…”

We understand that knowing God…not just knowing about Him, is the most important thing we can work at. Because really knowing Him – knowing his heart, and the extent of His love for us – should help to shape the way we see the world around us AND shape the way we live.  That’s why it is so important for us to stay connected to God through His Word and through prayer. It is how we get to know who He is.

What is your rhythm for getting to know God? Do you make time at some point in the day to read your Bible or spend some quiet time just talking and listening to God? Are you a part of a small group that meets regularly to encourage each other and pray for each other, growing in community with other?  If you don’t have a regular rhythm, maybe this is the week to start!

What small step toward God can you take this week?
