Read 1 Samuel 24:8-10
Then David went out of the cave and called out to Saul, “My lord the king!” When Saul looked behind him, David bowed down and prostrated himself with his face to the ground. He said to Saul, “Why do you listen when men say, ‘David is bent on harming you’? This day you have seen with your own eyes how the Lord delivered you into my hands in the cave. Some urged me to kill you, but I spared you; I said, ‘I will not lay my hand on my lord, because he is the Lord’s anointed.’
So far this week, we have learned how King Saul is out to kill David. Despite being hidden in the very same cave as Saul, David chooses to spare Saul. Instead of using his sword to kill, David cuts a piece of Saul’s robe before Saul leaves the cave.
In today’s reading, David confronts Saul after he leaves the cave. David asks Saul, “Why do you listen when men say, ‘David is bent on harming you?” and then tells Saul that others have encouraged him to kill Saul.
Friends, we must take caution in who we listen to. David is confronting Saul, but also relating to him at the same time. God blesses David with the gift of discernment. I love how he shares his knowledge with Saul. He confronts him and explains how dangerous it is to listen to others. He encourages Saul to seek truth and review the facts because there is freedom in truth.
Jesus declared in John 17:17 that we should be set apart by truth and that God’s written Word is the standard of absolute truth. (Sanctify them by the truth; your word is truth.) I’d like to encourage you to seek the truth in God’s Word through prayer and humility.
Ask God to reveal His truth to you and see what happens!
