Read Luke 9:1-2
When Jesus had called the Twelve together, he gave them power and authority to drive out all demons and to cure diseases, and he sent them out to proclaim the kingdom of God and to heal the sick.
Humans can be creatures of habit. We often move through life in predictable patterns. In my own life, there are certain patterns that I am prone to maintain because I know what to expect, and they feel safe. The desire to maintain and stay within our comfort zones can spill over into our faith. We go to church each week, maybe we read our Bible sometimes, or even serve at church. But truth be told, we could be tempted to let our faith stay at church or within the comfort of our homes. It is easier that way.
The disciples might have been tempted in the same way. If I put myself in their sandals for a minute – I think I might have been content to follow Jesus around…listening to him and learning from him. Taking it all in. But faith and the church were never meant to be like that. “The church was meant to be on its feet, in the world, telling stories and making things new. The church was meant to be sent” (“Sentness” by Kim Hammond and Darren Cronshaw).
In these verses, Jesus shows us exactly what he wants us to do… and his power makes it all possible.
In what ways do you feel God calling you to step out of the ordinary, predictable…safe aspects of your faith? Is there a co-worker who asks questions about God? Is there a family member God is prompting you to pray for – and to let them know you are praying for them? Ask God to show you how he would “send” you this week. Surrender to his power for whatever he reveals and then…go!
