Read 1 Samuel 18:1-4 NIV
“After David had finished talking with Saul, Jonathan became one in spirit with David, and he loved him as himself. From that day Saul kept David with him and did not let him return home to his family. And Jonathan made a covenant with David because he loved him as himself. Jonathan took off the robe he was wearing and gave it to David, along with his tunic, and even his sword, his bow and his belt.”
When David stepped onto the battlefield to face Goliath, he won more than a military victory — he won the friendship of Jonathan, son of King Saul.
In Jonathan, David found more than a friend; he found a godly ally, a brother in spirit who would stand by him through danger, jealousy, and political upheaval. Their bond wasn’t shallow or self-serving — it was rooted in faith, loyalty, and sacrificial love.
Jonathan defended David even when it put him at odds with his father, the king. He encouraged David when he was hiding in fear. He made room in his heart for God’s greater plan, even knowing that David would one day take the throne he might have inherited.
In a world that often values convenience over conviction, Jonathan shows us what true wise companionship looks like — courageous, faithful, and willing to yield to God’s will.
Something to think about today:
Do your closest relationships pull you toward God or away from Him? Are you the kind of friend who strengthens others in the Lord?
