Read: Psalm 137:1-3 NRSV
By the rivers of Babylon—

there we sat down and there we wept

    when we remembered Zion.

On the willows there

    we hung up our harps.

For there our captors

    asked us for songs,

and our tormentors asked for mirth, saying,

‘Sing us one of the songs of Zion!’

To mourn is to remember what was lost—peace, righteousness, belonging. The Israelites wept in exile, longing for home. In many ways, we too are exiles, strangers in a world that does not reflect God’s kingdom. Mourning keeps our eyes on heaven, our true home, where Christ reigns and all is made new.

Pray:
Father, may my mourning remind me that I am not yet home. Stir in me a longing for Your kingdom, where I will dwell with You forever.
