Read Psalm 10:1 NIV

Why, Lord, do you stand far off?

Why do you hide yourself in times of trouble?

There are times in my life when I feel like I could have written the words in today’s Psalm. Times when I have felt so alone and confused by what seems like a lack of movement on God’s part.  It makes it hard for me to rectify what I know about who God is and my experience in a very broken world.

When I am at my lowest I try to go back to Scripture and allow it to remind me of His faithfulness over time, both generically to his creation and specifically to me. Here are some verses that help get my head and my heart pointed in the right direction again.

Psalm 46:1-3 NIV – God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble. Therefore we will not fear, though the earth give way and the mountains fall into the heart of the sea, though its waters roar and foam and the mountains quake with their surging.

Luke 12:6-7 NIV – Are not five sparrows sold for two pennies? Yet not one of them is forgotten by God. Indeed, the very hairs of your head are all numbered. Don’t be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows.

Colossians 1:15-20 NIV – The Son is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation. For in him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things have been created through him and for him. He is before all things, and in him all things hold together. And he is the head of the body, the church; he is the beginning and the firstborn from among the dead, so that in everything he might have the supremacy. For God was pleased to have all his fullness dwell in him, and through him to reconcile to himself all things, whether things on earth or things in heaven, by making peace through his blood, shed on the cross.

Psalm 145:9 NIV – The Lord is good to all; he has compassion on all he has made.

John 16:33 NLT – I have told you all this so that you may have peace in me. Here on earth you will have many trials and sorrows. But take heart, because I have overcome the world.
