There are many forms and types of families among us today. There are single-parent households. There are blended families. Children can be raised by two parents or a single parent. There are situations where grandparents are raising children. Other family members may step in and take on the parental role. Couples without any children can be considered a family. Close friends may be referred to as family.

When I think of family, I tend to have a rose-colored-glasses view and desire of what things should be like. This unreasonable expectation of an ever-loving, positive environment where everyone is always kind and respectful, quickly leads to unwarranted disappointment. I find myself asking the dreaded question, “why can’t we all just get along?”

The reality is that just because we are related to someone, does not automatically make us  have the same thoughts or views, which may lead to disagreements and unkind words.

In Ephesians 4:29 the Apostle Paul cautions us, “Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that they may benefit those who listen.”   This verse helps me to stop and think about my words and the role I play in keeping the peace among my family.  I am reminded that my role in my family is superseded by the call of my Heavenly Father. He has called me to fight FOR my family, not against them!

Lord,

Thank you for my family and all our imperfections. Help me to look beyond my expectations and embrace all the blessings so that we may work together – not against each other. Help me to look to You for strength and provisions to honor my family as You have designed. My family is worth fighting for! I desire for them to know You and that we all grow deeper in our faith. I believe in You and trust in Your greater plan. Thank you. In Jesus Name, Amen
